NON HABITUAL RESIDENT IN PORTUGAL

As a Magnus Kern client, you will have access to our tax consultancy service to help you ascertain your eligibility for NHR status. While our tax partners are working on your eligibility for NHR, they will request a Portuguese tax number. They will assist you in all aspects of the application for NHR, including all the necessary paperwork and submitting it to the Portuguese tax authorities. 

Portugal’s NHR status enables qualifying persons to become tax residents in Portugal. This status legally minimizes income tax paid on particular categories of foreign-sourced income. You can enjoy these benefits of NHR for up to ten years, so long as you maintain residency for that time. 

To qualify for NHR status, you cannot have been resident in Portugal for the previous five years. You also need to have become a Portuguese tax resident by living in the country for six months or have bought or rented property to live there permanently. As an NHR, you may also be able to apply to pay a reduced 20% tax rate on your Portuguese income, depending on meeting the qualifying criteria.
